Engine Emissions
Engine emission measurements are typically made in very different environments and conditions depending on the purpose of the measurement. Standardized and regulated particle emission measurements are made in test cell environments, PTI stations and on board a moving vehicles according the details described in the regulations and standards. For various research purposes, engine emissions can be measured in different conditions and even pre-DPF conditions. The requirements for the measurement instrument in these different conditions can vary and need to considered when choosing the correct instrumentation for the measurements.
Solutions for engine emission measurement and sample conditioning
With over 25 years of experience behind our products, Dekati® solutions work for all engine emission measurements and for all types of engines. We offer products that help with determination of particulate emissions from engines, including both particle detection and sample conditioning solutions. For tailpipe emission measurements, we have solutions for both CVS and tailpipe sampling, both upstream and downstream exhaust after-treatment devices and even on-board PEMS/RDE measurements.
Our sample conditioning instruments can be connected to any particle measurement instrument and allow engine exhaust measurements from various conditions and engines:
- Both dynamometer and on-board RDE conditions
- CVS and tailpipe conditions
- PTI (Periodic Testing and Inspection) measurements
- Diesel and gasoline engines
- Marine engines
- Aircraft engines
On-board / RDE measurements
The Dekati® MPEC+™ (Mobile Particle Emission Counter) is specifically designed for easy onboard PN-PEMS measurements. At the core of the MPEC+™ is the patented Dekati® ePNC™ particle counting technology, which has been further optimized for fast transient emission measurements. The MPEC+™ is the device of choice for highly accurate PN-PEMS testing in accordance with RDE requirements. The MPEC+™ system consists of the Dekati® ePNC™ particle counter combined with a sample conditioning system that allows direct connection to raw exhaust gas. For RDE purposes, the ePNC™ has been further enhanced to accurately measure exhaust particle concentration in transient conditions.
CVS and tailpipe measurements for engine emissions
Dekati has several measurement solutions for CVS and direct tailpipe measurements on pre- and post-DPF conditions. The measurement solutions include both exhaust conditioning and dilution system and real-time particle detection. For aerosol dilutions, the we can offer systems for standardized EURO 6 measurements as well as solutions for measurements from extreme sample temperature and pressure conditions. Our particle detection instruments are capable of measuring both concentration and particle size distribution.
nPTI PN measurements
The Dekati® ePNC™ is an innovative particle counter sensor designed specifically for easy integration in Periodic Testing and Inspection (PTI) devices. This PN counter fills all requirements of the upcoming NPTI regulation for a particle number counter. This sensor fulfills the metrological requirements of Real Driving Emission (RDE) Regulation (EU) 2017/1154, and is thus fully in line with the upcoming requirements for PTI testing in Europe. The ePNC™ gives reliable data of particle number concentration and it has several integration options for implementation into customer specific systems. For use as a complete PTI particle counter system, the Dekati® ePNC™ is combined with a dedicated sample conditioning system that is designed by Dekati experts to ensure consistent performance in accordance with applicable legislation. The ePNC™ is part of Dekati’s Dekati Technologies line and more details can be found at www.dekatitechnologies.com.
Engine emission dilution and conditioning
Aerosol dilution and sample conditioning is an essential part of any particle measurement system. Most aerosol particle measurement instruments cannot measure reliably when sample conditions differ from ambient nor when particle concentration is high. A well-designed dilution system not only to reduces the concentration of the particles but also brings the sample conditions to a level that is acceptable for a measurement instrument without affecting the sample from engine emissions. Dekati exhaust emission conditioning systems can be combined with any particle detection system available and can be used for both standardized and non-standardized emission measurements.
